perhaps it would be good to discuss his views on religion etc. in a casual conversation before you put yourself out on a limb by asking him out on an actual date.
I highly agree! Unfortunately, I got caught up once in this without the prior knowledge... Our friendship had advanced, and his family came to him and had a "talk."
