Breaking Up

Should We Break Up? :
Someone is Moving

Itīs common for a couple in a relationship to be faced with a potential move. He might be going to college, sheīs going home because summerīs over, work requires a move, family requires a move. Itīs decision time - will your relationship work long distance? Should the other person pull up roots and move to be with the partner?

Both *can* work, but both require a lot of effort. Long distance relationships have worked very well for many people, but itīs not easy. If you enjoy close contact with your partner, and spending a lot of time with him/her, itīs going to be hard to be alone all the time. Work out a plan to see each other, and read the tips in the long-distance tip area.

Someone moving for the other person is a huge commitment. Make sure both partners are ready for the level of commitment involved - and are willing to put in the extra effort to make things work. Itīs going to be much harder keeping the relationship going with the extra stress involved, but if you truly care for each other, itīs worth it.

If, though, either partner feels uncertain about the relationship and whether itīs worth it to try to stay together, you need to seriously discuss it, and be honest. If you really donīt think itīll work, but figure you might try, thatīs a pretty feeble foundation to risk a cross-country move or a 6-month love-by-phone relationship on.
