Someone is Moving

It´s common for a couple in a relationship to be faced with a potential move. He might be going to college, she´s going home because summer´s over, work requires a move, family requires a move. It´s decision time - will your relationship work long distance? Should the other person pull up roots and move to be with the partner?

Both *can* work, but both require a lot of effort. Long distance relationships have worked very well for many people, but it´s not easy. If you enjoy close contact with your partner, and spending a lot of time with him/her, it´s going to be hard to be alone all the time. Work out a plan to see each other, and read the tips in the long-distance tip area.

Someone moving for the other person is a huge commitment. Make sure both partners are ready for the level of commitment involved - and are willing to put in the extra effort to make things work. It´s going to be much harder keeping the relationship going with the extra stress involved, but if you truly care for each other, it´s worth it.

If, though, either partner feels uncertain about the relationship and whether it´s worth it to try to stay together, you need to seriously discuss it, and be honest. If you really don´t think it´ll work, but figure you might try, that´s a pretty feeble foundation to risk a cross-country move or a 6-month love-by-phone relationship on.
