In Italy, the guests at a wedding were sure to have enjoyed a great deal of liquor, wine, and asti spumanti. When the wedding night came, the hijinks would begin. The family and friends would often have surprises waiting for the new couple - anything from boarding up the door to the house, to putting candies or herbs in the bed, to making loud noise or serenading the couple from outside their windows. This good-natured ribbing was to be expected!
