If you are feeling you need space from your partner, read all the other tips here to realize that this is NOT a real issue. If you want to be apart from your partner, it's for a reason. It's not just a bizarre nebulous fear. Are you feeling like your partner is too jealous? Are you wanting to not have the responsibility of a relationship? Are you feeling like your partner is too clingy? Then just say these things. Yes it's harder to be honest. But you owe it to your partner to be honest.

Also, be honest say this is a breakup. It is VERY cruel to string someone along. If you don't want to be with them, then you can't keep them around as a safety net. If you want to be away from them, then they deserve to find someone who DOES want to be with them. They don't deserve to be put on hold, like an unwanted stuffed animal, to wait around to see if you change your mind in the future.
