If your partner is making the claim they need space, forward them some of the other tips here. Make them realize that "needing space" is not a valid relationship claim.

Sit down and have a honest serious talk with your partner about what the REAL issue is. This is a really critical skill in a relationship. It's not easy! But it is necessary for the relationship to work. Find out what is really bothering him/her. If they claim they don't know, then talk about issues one by one and see what it could be. Are they bored? Jealous? Feeling tied down? Wanting to date someone else? It's hard to discuss - but either you discuss it, or your partner is going to run off to "take a break" and probably never come back.
