Numerous studies show that your general happiness in life affects how long you live and how successful you are in life. It governs how your family, friends and kids react to you. Don't underestimate the value of simply being happy. You think you are fooling others - but you are not.

That being said - don't confuse new-love happiness with a real long term contentment. If you have fallen into a pattern of arguing with an existing partner, you may be FAR more content once you get that solved. But on the other hand, don't stay with a long term partner simply because it IS long term. Just because you've suffered for years, do not assume you must suffer for your entire life.
