How long should I give her until I ask her?

My good friend just broke up with her boyfriend of six months. I like her so much and I have told her this. How long should I give her until I can ask her out on a date. I just saw her today two days after her breakup and we went to lunch. She seemed fine. When I asked how things were going with her and her boyfriend she said they broke up but didn't want to open up to me more about it. I said it was ok. I don't want to wait too long and have some other guy ask her out first. I was thinking about a week or so. I'm not sure. We do a lot of things as friends. How do I let her know that I want to go on a date? When I told her I liked her a couple of months ago (She was with him at the time)she said she was flattered and it was better I told her. Based on this do you think she will say yes if I ask her out? Also how long should I give her until I ask her?

When she seems happy after her breakup is the best time to step in and ask her out. Don't wait too long, however. Better sooner than later in this case.
