we were high school sweet hearts and i still love him

i have known this guy since i was 8 we were inseparable so it was only natural we started dating when i was 14. we were very much in love but but he was very controllin and bein young i didnt want that. i broke up with him and we went our seperate ways had kids etc but we always stayed friends. we have gotten back together a few times over the years when our r/ships failed but it was never for long. about 12 months ago i rang him and he wanted to come back to town so i picked him up and he stayed with me. we are extremely comfortable with each other and we laugh together constantly we have never argued over anything and sometimes he sent me the sweetest txt messages. but about 2 months later he got into the drugs so i made him leave then 7 months ago he went to jail. i have stood by him gave him money visited him every week and have cared for all his stuff and i keep in regular contact with his daughter. he told me before he went to jail that he cared for me but he didnt want to bring me down. now he tells his family (whom i am friends) with that he just wants to be friends with me for now. yet when i visit him he says things differently like everything will be better for me when he gets out etc etc like he is goin to stick around and make my life batter. i have told him that as long as he stays off the drugs he can live with me and i know we would be good for each other but is there any hope for us or am i just setting my hopes on someone who may never love me back?

You told him where you stand when you told him he could stay with you as long as he stays off drugs. You know you would be good for each other but only if he values you properly.

Stick to your guns on the drug thing. That's the key to your happiness. If he can stay clean then you will know he loves you.
