He insults me for no reason

I'm a 20 years old girl .I used to love a class mate who used to say he likes me. The problem is that the last time he broke up with me, i begged him not to do, that was last summer, yet he broke up with me. Now he thinks i love him no matter what i do to make him think he is just a friend to me.
That makes him insult me whenever he has the chance to. He's known to be a respectable and gentle person in college, and he is gentle with everyone. But with me , he sometimes acts very nice and sometimes he's very insulting. He can tell me things like " dun make me hang up on you" when we are talking on the phone infront of his friends, or make fun of me infront of the whole class. But every time he insults me, i try to find the right words to reply to his insult but i can't. I tried to stop dealing with him to get my dignity back but he just keeps insulting me more and more.
Sometimes when i'm talking with him he just stops me and yells at me " how dare you talk to me like this?" for no reason.
I tried to stop talking with him, i tried to avoid him and i tried ignoring him. I almost tried everything to stop these insults but i couldn't. I confess i was really hurt when he broke up with me, but now i'm in pain because im being insulted every now and then. Please i need your help, I want him to respect me like he respects all people. I'm a very respectable girl and I'm known for that besides i don't do anything to make me seem unrespectable, he also told me before that he respects me. But i know he doesn't with all these insults. Please help me, how can i stop these insults and make him respect me?

Tell him directly to his face to cut out the insults.
Tell him if he doesn't stop that you will start making fun of the size of his penis. (Doesn't matter if people believe you saw it or not, they will laugh anyways.)
That should clam him up... and increase his respect for you.
