why does he hide his love for me from others?

why does my boyfriend tell me that he loves me all the time, asks me to marry him, but when his family and friends(whom i have not met) ask him if we are serious he says and i quote,"i dont know yet im taking it one day at a time."?
is he lying to me or them?
