Should I ask him out?

I recently met a waiter in a neighborhood cafe. We really clicked. There was an immediate attraction and when we talked, we seemed to have had a lot in common. I was working up the nerve to ask him out, when I found out that he had taken a trip for the summer. I would like to know, when he comes back, if we still have the connection, should I ask him out or continue to talk to him and drop hints until he asks me. I have asked men out in the past and it was not always successful. I really like this guy and am not looking for just a casual fling, so I don't know how to approach this. Please help. Thanks.
