When your partner is not around to constantly ´remind´ you what he/she is really like, it´s easy to build up a fantasy world to help you get through the absence. You may imagine he´s much more patient or she´s much more gentle than he/she actually is. This can lead to some harsh coming-back-to-reality when you do get together again and have to spend long periods of time together.
Try to keep the relationship as real as possible - talk often, talk about the day to day items, keep each other in your real lives. The less separated your relationship becomes from reality, the easier it will be to regain it when you get back together.
