I've recently learnt that I have genital herpes

Visitor's Question from a 16-20 year old Female
Hi,
I've recently learnt that I have genital herpes, which has surprised me a lot, since I've only had a partner and we never had intercourse. Anyway, now I'm single and I feel very insecure about approching new guys. In fact I really like one of my classmates. I can't help but think that as soon as he knows about the herpes thing he'll back off. This depresses me quite a lot. What's your opinion? I mean, I'm afraid of people's reaction to this news.I don't want to tell this to anyone, just to potential partners. Obviously no one wants to get infected... and even having safe sex he would be at risk. Would you go out with someone that has herpes?
Thank you very much.

You've probably done a Google search on genital herpes, but for those who haven't, here is a good Harvard study that shows that about 22% of adults in the U.S. have genital herpes:

Naturally you are depressed and anxious about the possible reactions you might get from those you choose to tell. Knowing that almost 1/4 of U.S. adults have this condition should make you relax a bit. My guess is that an even higher percentage in your age group would be infected.

You are right about telling your potential partners and expect rejection in some cases.

Would I date someone with genital herpes? It would depend on the situation.

Good luck! George
