Condoms and Birth Control

Visitor's Question from a 13-15 year old Female
i lost my virginity over a month ago. The first few times i knew i was safe from being pregnant because i got my period. I've had sex several times after that always using a condom, but i don't take birth control. Will i become pregnant now? I'm supposed to get my period this week but it hasn't come and i'm really starting to stress out about it. Can i keep having sex with just usting a condom?

You're mixing things up here a little. A condom IS birth control. Birth control is anything that helps prevent pregnancy from happening. That includes a condom, a diaphragm, birth control pills, spermicidal jelly, and many other things. You can use these things singly or all at the same time.

NO method of birth control is 100% accurate (except NOT having sex). Any time you DO have sex there is always a risk of pregnancy, even if you use birth control. Nothing is foolproof. So if you have sex 100 times, 99 of those times might be safe! But one of those times might result in pregnancy, even if you use a condom, even if you take the pill.

So it's critical that you hold off on having sex until you really are ready to prepare for that chance. I know plenty of people who used birth control, had sex, and got pregnant. You need to look at your finances and the place you call home and decide if you're ready to handle a child in your life, and if you're willing to make that trade-off for the pleasures of sex. Remember, there's lots of pleasure you can get in sexual ways WITHOUT intercourse. The only real difference with intercourse is that you have the added risk of pregnancy.
