The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes

The highwayman by Alfred Noyes sacrifices are made by people unable to live without the one they love. Bess, the landlord’s daughter, and the highwayman loved each other but there was another man named Tim, who also loved her. “His eyes were hollows of madness, his hair like mouldy hay, but he loved the landlord’s daughter.” He is jealous of the highway man and betrays him to some soldiers. He was willing to sacrifice the highwayman in the hope that Bess would then love him. The soldiers knew that she might tell her love about their plan to trap him so they tied a gun to her. When she heard the highway man’s horse coming she pressed the trigger to warn him with her death. The Highwayman hears the shot and flees but when he discovers what happened in the morning he returns to the inn and is killed by the soldiers. The lovers sacrificed their lives because they couldn’t live without each other. Love can make a person to away somebody’s life or give up their own life.
