“Grandpa, I love you”

Sally and her Grandfather were extremely close. Everyday, Sally would ask to go and play at Grandpas house. If she was allowed she would happily skip over and play. Grandpa gave her piggy-back rides, and played tag with her and when they finished playing tag she stated:

“Grandpa, I love you”

And Grandpa replied:

“And I, you”

When he said this Sally laughed and they continue playing. The very next day Sally came over to play. They played cards and built card houses. Then they went out and bought ice-creams. While they were eating ice-creams Sally stated:

“Grandpa, I love you”

And Grandpa replied:

“And I, you”

When he said this Sally laughed and they continued eating ice-creams. The following day Sally went over to Grandpas to play. This time they played dress-up. Sally dressed up as a cow and Grandpa was dressed in a dress! After they played dress-up they went to Grandpas favorite park and walked. When they stopped and sat back to look at the clouds Sally stated:

“Grandpa, I love you”

And Grandpa replied:

“And I, you”

When he said this Sally laughed and they continued to watch the clouds. The next day it was raining, but Sally was allowed to go over to Grandpas house. When she got inside, she saw grandpa sleeping on the couch. She decided to creep over to him and sleep beside him. When she was just about ready to sleep Sally whispered quietly:

“Grandpa, I love you”

And Grandpa didn’t reply, and Sally didn’t laugh, but they continued to sleep through the dark rainy day. When the rain stopped Sally woke up, but Grandpa didn’t. So Sally crept out of the room and quietly walked back home. The very next day Sally wasn’t allowed to go to Grandpas house because he was rushed to the hospital. He was dying from a severe fever and was rushed into the emergency room.
When the family was notified Sally was the first to run out of the house and race to the hospital. When she finally got there she asked for ‘Grandpa’, and the nurse understood and kindly guided her to her grandpa. She raced towards him, with tears in her eyes, and cried:

“Grandpa, I love you”

And Grandpa didn’t say anything, his eyes were closed and his mouth shut. His skin was pale and he looked sick. Bawling, Sally turned away, but she was stopped. She heard something, she heard her grandpa speak ever so quietly:

“And I, you”

She smiled and laughed, through tears in her eyes, and quietly walked out of the room. The next day grandpa died and there was an overall sadness amongst the family. However time passed and everyone continued their regular lives. One day though Sally and her Mommy walked in the park and they sat back and looked at the clouds. That day Sally said:

“Mommy, I have a question.”

Mommy replied:

“What is it, cupcake?”

Sally answered:

“Why do people die?”

Mommy thought about it for a minute and finally said:

“Because their souls are ready to be set free”

And Sally nodded and gazed into the clear sky, imagining her grandpas soul floating in the summer breeze.
