How should i ask him out?!

I have a friend that i have known for four years. Him and i became distant friends, but now he are closer. We hug and talk ALOT, and now i think that i really like him, but he is too shy and i have gotten my heart broken too many times. Basically im scared. So how should i go about telling how i feel and asking him out?
