Avoiding the Door Sill

In Ireland, when the married couple reached their home, the husband would carry his wife over the threshold. In part this was to evade the mischievous leprechauns that lingered there, hoping to trip the bride as she entered her new home. Also, the action of carrying the bride is a throwback to the days of family wars. In those days, warring Irish men would simply 'capture' the women they wished to marry from an opposing clan and drag them back home again.
