what should I do

My boyfriend of 3 years broke up with me a week ago. We lived together and he has since moved out. He said we had too many trust issues that we couldn't get past. I couldn't trust him not to cheat (I was constantly finding little things to make me suspicious) and he couldn't trust me not to snoop. I love him more than anything. He says he still loves me but its not enough and because of past actions he is not in love with me anymore. He says the only thing we can do is not live together anymore and give each other some space. That we can start back at square one and see how that goes with no expectations. So technically we can say we are "dating" or "seeing each other" still but he wouldn't classify us as girlfriend/boyfriend anymore. Is anyone else confused by this? How can you start at square one after being together for 3 years? That usually means no commitment to one person either so technically frees him up to see other people. I don't know what to do. I just want him back I love him so much. Everyone says to just let him go and eventually he will realize what he is missing and come back but I am scared that if I just let go and let him think I'm ok and don't care then he will run right into someone elses arms now that he has no "guilt" about hurting me. He knows I love him like nothing else.
