It's not a big surprise that your ex is worried. After all, he gave his heart to you once, and you abandoned him because you hadn't fully gotten over your previous breakup. He has no guarantee that if you start dating him again, the exact same thing won't happen. You were willing to leave him for another, and thought he wasn't good enough at the time.
If you do want to give it another try, you really have to sit down and talk with him and explain to him how your feelings have changed. You need to explain WHY you went back to your ex - and what you've learned since then that would prevent that from happening again. You've betrayed his trust in you, so you have to put some serious effort into rebuilding it. That will involve a lot of talking, a lot of explaining so he can really understand and believe that the situation is different this time around.
