Telling the Band Guy I Like Him

Visitor's Question from a 13-15 year old Female
I have a crush on a guy in the trumpet section of our high school band, but i don't know how to tell him how i feel about him. I admit I'm a little apprehensive to just waltz up and say "I like you!" I mean it's not as easy as you think, especially for me because I always hide my feelings because I've been hurt in the past and i'm afraid it's gonna happen again if I show my true feelings. Please help me!

You're quite right that just walking up to someone and saying you like them is scary - it's also really dangerous. That is not a great way to get a positive response!

it's the same thing in general. You have to get to be *good friends* first. And by the time you're really good friends, he'll know you like him, and you'll know he likes you back. So start doing friendly stuff, talking with him, hanging out with him. Get him a cute gift for Valentine's Day. Talk to him about the band things, then start talking with him more about your life, his life, your family, his family.

The closer you two get and the more comfortable you are with each other, the more you can now go to movies and such as friends too. And in there at some point, you'll realize that dating really isn't that much more of a step, and that you're almost there anyway, and you enjoy each other's company ...
