It's rarely wise to just tell an ex something like that. There is so much history there that it can be mistrusted. There's a saying that actions speak louder than words. Rebuild your friendship. Talk to him, spend time with him, show interest in the things that are important to him. Show him with real actions that you still are concerned for his well being.
