i like him, he still likes her, what should i do?

I am 18 years old. I really like this guy. He previously dated one of my friends and she was a complete bitch to him. He still cares about her but doesn't know why. One of my friends has tried to make it clear to him that I am interested in him. But I don't have the heart to tell him myself. He is a great guy and I want to get to know him better. We both spend quite a bit of time together. I have went to see him and stayed at his house. We talk quite a bit too. So what should I do, I just need someone elses opinion.

Meanwhile work on the important aspects of your relationship: sharing feelings with him which will help him trust you; share information with him and you will get closer; and, be affectionate (not only physically) by complimenting him and calling him a pet name.
Also, make him his favorite dinner.
