You won't be able to forgive or forget easily or soon.

It would be good if he could explain why he left but he seems to be afraid to tell you. Try to gently help him to overcome his fear and help you understand what happened. Let him know you won't be angry whatever he says. (You probably will be angry but save that for later.)

Learning why he left will help you forgive and forget. As long as you believe what he says. Make sure you let him know that you are understanding and that you don't feel that he is a bad person. He must have his reasons and however they might hurt you, you would be better off hearing the reasons rather than imagining and worrying over what they are.

Hope this helps! George
