How can he kiss me and tell me he just wants to be friends?

A male friend invited me to his apartment for some dessert, and boy was I not expecting what he really meant! As I was getting ready to go home he kissed me! And he kept going at it, like he didn't want me to leave. I was so shocked that I left the kiss early and went home. I thought this was a sign that he was interested in me. We have been friends through class for several months. But his excuse doesn't satisfy me, in fact it hurts a lot. I asked if he wanted to date. He apologized and said that he couldn't help himself, he's a guy. He was still getting over a relationship that ended a year and a half ago. He said he's still confused about things. I'm thinking he is embarrassed. He skipped class a few days. Can I take a kiss lightly and still salvage a friendship?

My guess is that he wanted a lot more than a kiss.

And, he has made it clear that he's not ready for a relationship.

It's up to you whether you can live with that situation. Some couples do.
