Why would she be avoiding me?

I really like this girl and she is my friend. I wouldnt say best friends, but just friends. I would see her every once in a while and we would chit chat. I eventually told her one day that I liked her alot and that maybe we could be more than just friends lot. Now though it seems that she has started to avoid me completely. Now when I see her, she doesn't say hi anymore and she wont even talk or look at me anymore. I am really dissapointed because I really like this girl and now there is just complete avoidance. Why would she be doing this? What should I do?

Two reasons come to mind...

one is that she is very shy and can't handle the pressure of having a relationship.

the other is that she wants to give you a clear message that she doesn't want to be closer to you, so she is backing completely away.
