Falling Out of Love

Visitor's Question from a 21-30 year old Male
Can a man fall out of hopeless love within a few days or is he just fooling himself?

Well, love is a pretty powerful emotion. But it depends a lot whether this is a passing infatuation love or a love that has built up over many months or years.

Let's say you meet a girl on the street. You decide her face is pretty and that you "love" her. You obsess over her, dream about her, but you really don't know anything about her. This is really infatuation and you can usually redirect this infatuation to someone else, to your next passion. This is sort of the boy-band feeling, that you LOVE a member of N Sync, but then another band comes along and now you LOVE someone new.

However, true love takes a long time to heal from. Say that you have a good friend of yours, female, that you spend time with every day. You really enjoy your time together, you read the same books and discuss them, you go for long walks and just talk. After months together you get engaged and get married. Now say something tragic happens to her. It will take you quite a while - maybe months or even years - to recover from that. You may always have a special place in your heart for her. So recovering from a true love can take a while.
